The Roadway Lighting Investment

A roadway lighting system is a costly investment to purchase, install, maintain and to operate.

Most Roadway Authorities in Canada have a mandate to reduce their annual operating expenditures.

During the estimated 20 year life span of a lighting system, energy costs amount to over 70% of its total owning and operating costs.

Light trespass, offending glare and sky-glow are three other important challenges to owning and operating a roadway lighting system.

Roadway Traffic Usage

Roadway traffic activity varies from maximums at peak morning and afternoon “rush hours” to minimums during the late evening and early morning hours. Traffic is normally significantly lighter between the hours of 11:00 pm to 6:00 am.

Pedestrian/ vehicle activity is usually more intense during these peak periods and conversely less intense at night when most people are at home and asleep.

Roadway Lighting Standards are governed by the Illuminating Engineering
Society of North America. IESNA RP-8-00 is the current standard that
lighting engineers use when designing roadway lighting systems.

IESNA RP-8-00:

Roadway lighting systems are designed to Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) standards that provide light levels to meet the requirements of maximum roadway and pedestrian traffic activity.

The IESNA (RP-8-00) offers three recommended light levels (High Medium-Low) to address the various levels of traffic flow and pedestrian activity.

The Opportunity

We are illuminating our roadways unnecessarily for maximum traffic activity throughout the late evening, night-time and early morning period.

We are producing up to twice as much light as we require in order to see properly on our streets and roadways.

We are consuming more electrical power than we require in order to illuminate our streets adequately between 11:00 pm and 6:00 am every day.

This is not only a waste of electrical power, money and our resources, but it is a major contributor to pollution in the form of unnecessary CO2 emissions as well as light pollution in the form of Sky-Glow, light trespass and offending glare.

A Solution

We can safely reduce the light levels on most streets and roadways, conserve electrical energy, reduce sky-glow, reduce offending glare and light trespass.

We can provide a system that makes our roadway lighting more flexible and adaptable to different road usage requirements.

A system that can raise and lower the light levels easily and economically, based on measured roadway activity.

A system that can minimize electrical energy consumption for many pre-determined hours each and every night.

Night-Saver HID Dimming System
for Outdoor Lighting:

Night-Saver is an energy management lighting control system that reduces the electrical energy consumption and light output from the full designed level to the pre-set energy saving reduced level each and every night.

Night-Saver lowers the light level, thereby reducing sky-glow, offending glare and light trespass.

Night-Saver is designed for roadway lighting applications where long distances between poles make interconnection of controls cumbersome, expensive and unreliable.

Night-Saver
is installed within each roadway luminaire by maintenance personnel in minutes and requires no maintenance or servicing.

Each Night-Saver operates independently, however it is linked to the others by virtue of time.

Night-Saver is programmed at the factory to simplify the installation, minimize installation costs and to eliminate field setting errors.

Night-Saver is sealed at the factory after it is programmed to specific customer requirements.

Here are simple payback periods at 10 cents per KWH excluding Night-Saver cost savings due to possible government grants.
5.3 yrs 3.3 yrs 2.6 yrs 2.1 yrs 1.4 yrs
These are respectable payback periods when compared to other dimming control systems. If you multiply these values by the number of roadway luminaries in your system the total savings are substantial.

Recommended applications:

Night-Saver can be applied where vehicle / pedestrian traffic is reduced in the late night and in the early morning hours. It is not recommended to be used where traffic-pedestrian conflict continues to be at a high level or where accident frequency is high.

Applications such as Local roads, Collectors, Major roads and Expressways can all benefit from the energy conservation features of Night-Saver.

Adaptability:

Night-Saver is available for 100 watt, 150 watt, 200 watt, 250 watt and 400 watt High Pressure Sodium CWA ballasted luminaries.

It is also available for 175 watt, 250 watt and 400 watt CWA Metal Halide.

Night-Saver is designed to operate with 120 volt AC supply and it can also be adapted to other voltages.

Night-Saver can be applied to indoor luminaries as well as outdoors.

Night-Saver consists of a controller module and dual-section Night-Saver installs quickly and easily capacitor that are designed to match your luminaire.

Night-Saver installs quickly and easily into most roadway and outdoor luminaries.
