Night-Saver street lighting dimming in Lac Megantic, Quebec delivers excellent results.

Mont Megantic Provincial Park houses Canada’s largest telescope atop Mont Megantic in the Eastern Townships, two hundred kilometers south east of Montreal.

Increased sky glow due to the growing population in the area has made it difficult to perform the research for which the observatory is renowned. Chloe Legris, engineer with Astrolab heads up the light abatement project with the surrounding communities to reduce sky glow in the area.

The City of Lac Megantic, a community of 6,000 people, is dimming their lighting late at night using the Night-Saver system. They installed six Night-Saver units in 100-watt high-pressure sodium cobra heads in a residential subdivision. Jonathan Fisette, chief electrician with the city, took a section of roadway and converted the existing lighting over to the Night-Saver dimming system. Jean-Francois Grandmont, the city clerk and lawyer for the city who lives in the test area, indicated that he was extremely satisfied with the results.

The dimming is set to start at 10:00 pm and end at 6:00 am each morning. The dimming level is set at and is achieving 65% dimming. The supply voltage is 120 volts. When dimmed, the system maintains the same maximum to minimum ratios, however the lighting is much softer. Light trespass, up-light and discomfort glare are reduced by 65%. The city is saving 53% of their energy and associated costs during the dimming period.

The City of Lac Megantic, Quebec plans to install Night-Savers in all of their street lighting within the next few months.

Night-Saver saves up to 50% or more of the electrical power while dimming the lighting during the late night hours.

Night-Saver can have a significant impact on your energy management program.
